I finished finally!!!
So I was finally able to make the body and antlers the way I wanted them, but I also added grass at the bottom of the tile. (Mostly because the hooves were giving me trouble). I also added some of the grass that climbs up the deer, which was different from my digital sketch, but I thought would tie in to my cat piece. I also changed the tile from its original square design to a more circular one. We have half of next week off, so I may work on finishing a few other pieces that I have in the works.

I had to get away from the cat head this week. I was scrolling though the images on my phone and found a picture of an old digital drawing I had made. I loved the idea of making a piece based on it, so I spent a few days figuring out what do to. I decided on making a tile with the deer coming out of it.
This week I was able to start on the head and a a bit of the body, but I had to restart a lot of it. Next week I want to finish it next week, especially since I don't have the Vaseline for the plaster foot project. This week was painful. I spent the whole week trying to complete my cat piece. The problem was, all of the sculpey was cracking and I had to redo a lot of my work. I ended up deciding that I'm just going to use some real/fake leaves and flowers along with the sculpey. I ended up baking it on Friday.
Next week, I want to get away from this project and start a new one. I was sketching it out, and since the rest of the sculpture students are doing animal sculptures, I feel almost peer pressured to sculpt one too. Alright, let me give you a run down of my week. I tried to put polymer clay on the cat, but I learned way too quickly that the clay got too brittle and the vines would fall off. So, I tried to use wires for the vines instead. I discovered that in trying to place the wires, they scratched off a lot of my watercolor work. This made me go back to clay, and the picture above is the most recent clay attempt.
I also planned out another piece. It'll be a lot bigger, and unfortunately it'll probably be paper mache, but I'm excited about it. I'm going to take it home over the "between semesters break" to try and bake the clay on and finish it off. I'm on a roll! I was able to completely finish this piece!
It was hard trying to make the chicken look realistic while still keeping some cartoonish qualities, but I am really happy with how it turned out. I had a ton of fun figuring out the watercolors and trying to create a style that's very me. I decided to do the coloring based off my chicken Donatello who passed away last year, so this piece is special to me. Next week, I want to try and make some last touches to my pieces before the semester ends. I want to try and get the flowers and vines onto my cat piece, as well as try to sketch and plan my course of action for next semester. Lots to do, so little time. This week I tried learning how to watercolor a ceramic piece. This was difficult, since I never use watercolor and rarely ever paint. I did find it satisfying, however, and I'm liking the progress that I'm making with this piece. Next week, I'm going to try and paint my chicken piece since I'm on a watercolor high right now!
This week, I not only put the finishing touches on my chicken piece, but I also finished sculpting a cat piece. My plan for the cat is that once it is fired, I'm going to paint it and cover it with sculpey flowers and vines, specifically roses. The reason I left the eye socket open is because I want the vines to originate from there.
My plan next week is to start a sculpey project. I would start another clay one, but there just isn't enough time to fire it before winter break. Monday we go to the art museum, and I'm hoping that I can be inpired and come up with new ideas and concepts, as right now I feel stuck in my concentration. The Hands of Doctor Moore by Diego RiveraThis piece was a request from the wife of Dr. Moore. Many people suspect that this commission was also a way for Diego to process the loss of his ex-wife Frida Kohla, as this piece is stylistically distinct from his others due to the use of elements Frida would use in her own paintings. The banner at the bottom of the painting refers to the tree in the middle as "the tree of life", and is a reference to the female body, with the cells on the branches showing how the female body is able to create life. The tree is also a representation of Frida herself. The doctor operating on the tree is a reference to the numerous operations Frida underwent during her life. Diego made sure not to show the face of the doctor, rather choosing to show only his hands. This emphasizes the importance of doctoral work, and how the operations that doctor's partake in are the key to extending life itself, (as shown by trimming the tree to foster its growth). Despite the extension of life doctors can grant, no life goes on forever. Frida's death is also represented through the shaved off portion of the tree’s roots, alluding to how her cause of death, pulmonary embolism, originally starts in the legs. This painting serves as a way for Diego to acknowledge the important work that Doctor Moore has dedicated his life to, as well as to honor the life of Frida. This week was really short, but I started a new project! I'm really enjoying this project, and I think I'm actually making really good progress with it so far. This piece was inspired by the death of a few of my chickens, so it has a lot of emotional value to me. I've already had to redo the neck, which doesn't bode well for me for the future of this project, but I'm hopeful.
I want to finish my heart over the break, since it's already at my house. I'm also taking the chicken piece home so it doesn't become bone dry. |
